Nacelle for the Worlds largest free stream Tidal Turbine leaves SMD

Earlier this year SMD, one of the worlds leading subsea engineering companies, announced a collaboration agreement with Atlantis Resources Corporation to manufacture the worlds largest free stream tidal turbine. After 6 months of intense fabrication and assembly work, SMD has completed the main nacelle for the AK1000 tidal turbine which has now been transported to Invergordon in Scotland for final assembly of the blades and mooring base
The fabrication of the nacelle structure was completed using local companies before assembly with the main drive train components at the SMD facilities on the banks of the Tyne at Wallsend. Work on the control system and cable connection system continues at SMD prior to shipment to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney where the completed turbine will be installed in August. SMD will continue to provide Technical support during final assembly and installation.

SMD is one of the world’s leading subsea engineering companies designing and manufacturing Work Class ROVs, trenching systems, subsea mining machines and tidal generation devices. They have a worldwide customer base operating in oil and gas, telecoms, mining, salvage, renewables, defence and scientific markets.  SMD has offices in UK, USA and Singapore.
